13 March. Letter to SRA residents by Lesley Bremner
on behalf of SRA
Dear Residents We have had several comments and questions with regard to the installation of the two speed humps in Taurus Road. I want to address the questions that have been raised so that you can be up to speed with what is happening. We will also shortly be delivering ‘news flashes’ on our website. So we encourage you to log on and stay informed. Once we are up and running with this new facility we will let you know. There is a ‘master plan’ in place which resulted from the feedback we received in November from residents when we asked for your comments and complaints relating to traffic issues within our suburb. The submission was delivered to the JRA via our Councilor in February and to our delight, work commenced last week on the humps in Taurus Road near to the intersection with Keurboom. The ‘master plan’ makes provision for speed humps, calming circles, additional signage and road markings on major roads and intersections within the boomed area. The roll out of these measures is dependent on authorization but mainly on the availability funds from the JRA but we are advised that this might be forthcoming in their new financial year. So for the moment, we need to wait and see what is forthcoming over the next few weeks and months. There have been complaints about the size/height of the humps. These are as per the JRA specifications and we have no say with regard to their shape or size. Location of the humps – we have made recommendations but the ultimate placing of these humps are at the JRA’s discretion. Painting of lines – unfortunately the lines could not be painted on the same day, but they have now been done and are very visible. Thank you to all those residents who have been very complimentary about this initiative. Your support of our initiative to make Sundowner a safer place to live in is very much appreciated. Comments from SRA Members
| 1 | "I am very impressed with the bumps, it does make a real diffrence." |

| 2. | "We fully support the traffic calming measures…..those that have had their vehicles damaged by the speed bumps were driving too fast in any case……..those that complain are exactly those that the measures are being implemented for." |
| 3. | "
The speed humps are a welcome sight in our suburb and will hopefully prevent non Sundowner residents who use Sundowner as a through road and short cut, from using our suburb as a race track (this includes some residents too) or that they will now find an alternate route. A highly commendable initiative – well done!!" |
| 4. | "I am all for the speed bumps and the people who are complaining or who have damaged their cars are obviously speedsters and those people are then the reason why we had to resort to such measures. Thank you for the initiative." |
| 5. | "I just wanted to say that I did not complain about the Taurus bumps, they are not too bad, and generally a good idea. It is the Puttick bumps which are too high.
" |
| 6. | "Well done, great idea." |
| 7. | "I am absolutely thrilled that the SRA has been successful with their approaches to JRA and that these traffic calming measures are being introduced. Congratulations to all who were involved in this successful initiative. I am sure those complaining are those who use our suburb as a short-cut raceway to cut through our various streets and avoid traffic on the main roads! I hope that eventually JRA get to install some sort of calming measure in Keurboom Street, especially towards the bottom near the townhouses where the townhouse-dwellers build up some speed in excess of 100 km per hour before going round the corner into Worsboom Street. If one of them crashes into a wall and damage their motor vehicle, so be it. But what concerns me more is that a pedestrian walking their children and/or their dogs will be injured or killed. " |
| 8. | "I think the speed bumps are fabulous, people seem to think Taurus road is Kylami Race Track. I think the height is perfect, I have a low under carriage it doesn’t affect my car at all. |
